Foie gras is a disease in which too much fat accumulates in liver cells. The disease is also known as steatosis. The abnormal accumulation of fat in the liver was observed in alcoholics, but later discovered that the disease also occurs among non-alcoholics. Usually occurs in people who are obese or diabetic, or those with hypertriglyceridemia.
The exact reason that causes this condition is not fully understood. It seems that some people, excessive fatty acids are not stored in fat cells, which are normally stored and found in the liver. Fats remain outside the cells and cause the appearance of a series of reactions leading to damage of hepatocytes. Women are more often affected and the disease can occur at any age, including children.
